If you are planning a holiday in Felanitx, the following information may help by giving you an overview of the area.

Felanitx is located approximately 13km inland from Porto Colom and is the centre of Mallorca’s second wine producing area and it is said that 9 out of 10 bottles of Mallorcan wine come from here. Located close to the town on the old country estate of Son Burguera is the AN Negra winery [Anima Negra]. The wines of the relatively young wine cellars [only established in 1994] have made a big impression on wine connoisseurs with its blends already reaching cult status. The Armero y Adrover winery produced rose and white wines and are amongst the best in Mallorca.

Felanitx is also known for its capers – sometimes known as “green pearls”. Buy them at the Sunday market held in the village during the morning in the streets around the church of San Miguel – they are sold by their size and are called nonpareilles [up to 7mm] and surfines [7-8mm]. Why not buy some locally produced sobrasada de porc negra [spicy pork sausage]. You may also find locally made pottery on display on the church steps. You will see on the outside of the church a memorial to the 414 people who died when a wall collapsed in 1844 and you can see the archangel Michael standing on the devil’s head just beneath the rose window.

When approaching Felanitx you can’t fail to notice the windmills that are built on the outskirts of the town which is the birthplace of 20th century painter Miguel Barcel√≥. Once inside the town, you will see many narrow streets lined with 18th and 19th century houses and in the town’s main square [Plaza Sa Font] you will see the Font de Santa Margalida that was once the municipal well and now a water fountain.
