Climate change and eco travel are becoming increasingly important to holidaymakers who are visiting destinations such as the
Canary Islands, according to one travel company.
Dermot Blastland, managing director of travel group TUI UK and Ireland, says that the idea of behaving responsibly when it comes to the environmental aspect of travelling is now more imperative for tourists.
He adds: "Consumers are going on holiday because they want to have a good time but 60 per cent of them prefer to go with companies who are eco-friendly."
Mr Blastland suggests that tourist destinations need to plan for climate change, with the development of new hotels taking into account just how important this factor is for many holidaymakers.
According to I Know Canary Islands, the island of
El Hierro offers ecotourism holidays for those who rank climate change as high on their agenda. This is the quietest of all the islands and is described as peaceful and tranquil, with some of the best walking on offer from all of the Canaries.
