Many British holidaymakers do not realise they are acting as ambassadors for their country when travelling abroad.
This is according to Tom Hall, a travel editor at Lonely Planet, who said people should make an effort to research their destinations before jetting off.
"You are not going to be the only person who comes through there; your behaviour can have an enormous impact on the perception of your country," he explained.
He noted that the more you research your destination, the more enjoyable your holiday will be.
Talking to other people who have visited the country can also be useful, Mr Hall continued.
His comments come after figures published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealed that thousands of travellers required consular assistance as a result of holiday mishaps last year.
More than 2,290 Britons were arrested in Spain alone, while 741 were hospitalised in the country.
