Those jetting abroad this summer have been advised by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that the majority of insurance policies offer protection for those who find their holiday is affected by swine flu.
"Travel insurance will typically cover the cost of medical treatment abroad if people contract swine flu while on holiday. It will also cover the cost of rearranged flights and accommodation for anyone covered by the policy," the organisation noted.
People diagnosed with swine flu before they travel will have the cost of their holiday cancellation covered by most insurers.
Most airlines have their own procedures in place for dealing with travellers who may be medically unfit and turned away. According to the ABI, insurance should cover the cost of rearranged flights and accommodation should this occur.
Research published last week by Post Office Travel Insurance revealed that 60 per cent of Britons are planning to holiday abroad this summer.
Of those surveyed, 23 per cent said they would consider not taking out an insurance policy in a bid to cut costs.
