Holidaymakers jetting off to popular destinations such as the
Canary Islands have been warned that they should store their cash and cards securely.
Dan Moore, a senior researcher at consumer publication Which? Money, said that when people go abroad, "all practical things go out of their head", with holidaymakers likely to have a more relaxed frame of mind than they would at home in the UK.
"If you are on holiday, you've got shorts on in a light material, so it's quite clear that someone is carrying around cash with them or a card," he explained.
In addition, Mr Moore advised against carrying wallets in large beach bags, adding that they may be an easy target for opportunistic thieves.
Research published by life assistance firm CPP earlier this year revealed that there has been a 17 per cent increase in the number of cards being lost or stolen abroad in the last 12 months.
