The number of people booking winter sun holidays to the
Canary Islands, including destinations such as
Fuerteventura, has risen by 19 per cent compared to last year, according to reports.
Research from On the Beach revealed that the Canary Islands are the most popular destination for last-minute deals to winter sun locations.
Figures show that sales of last-minute flights and hotels across the globe are up by 40 per cent compared to October 2008.
The research also suggests that Britons took shorter summer holidays this year in favour of an extended winter sun break.
Winter sun holiday stays have gone up to an average of nine nights, compared to seven in 2008.
Katye Williams, holidays channel manager at travelsupermarket said: "The Canaries generally [are] a year round destination, so it's always going to be popular."
Research from Co-operative Travel shows that there is something of a north-south divide when it comes to winter sun, with flights from northern airports showing increases of up to 46 per cent.
Flights from southern airports increased by a more modest 11 per cent.
