Queen Sofia of Spain took part in an unusual activity during her official visit of
Fuerteventura, which celebrated the biodiversity of the island.
She was involved in releasing several sea turtles into the ocean during her stay on the picturesque isle.
Fuerteventura has a huge variety of marine animals living on its shores, from dolphins and cachalots to the sea turtles that come to the island to reproduce.
The value of this was recognised in April when Unesco made it one of the 553 biosphere reserves in the world because of its range of ecosystems.
The organisation also noted: "The island is also investing in the increase of its renewable energy capacity, mainly through wind-based and solar energy production."
Queen Sofia was on an official visit to the
Canary Islands and went on to Lobos after being in Fuerteventura.
She was there to open a visitors centre on the island.
