Britons taking holidays to hot destinations such as
Gran Canaria and
Fuerteventura are being urged to protect themselves from the sun.
Rebecca Freeman of the British Association of Dermatologists said there has "undoubtedly" been an increase in skin cancer cases in recent years.
"There are several possible causes. The increase in affordable holidays in sunny destinations may play a role, as may the fashion amongst young people to have bronzed skin," she commented.
Those heading overseas this summer should avoid going outside without sun protection and use self-tanning products as an alternative, Ms Freeman added.
According to Cancer Research UK, holidaymakers should invest in a wide-brimmed hat and a good-quality pair of sunglasses.
Those spending long periods of time outside are advised to wear loose clothing with a close weave, which will help to block out UV rays.
Travellers should also remember that wet clothing may only provide half the protection that dry clothing does, the organisation noted.
