Relaxing holidays in the
Canary Islands and other popular destinations are still viewed as an important expenditure, despite the credit crunch, it has been claimed.
Paul Havenhand, marketing director for insurance specialist Towergate Bakers, said that instead of sacrificing holidays, consumers were simply looking for better deals and cutting costs in other areas.
Britons work longer hours than most of their European counterparts and enjoy fewer bank holidays, he said.
"A week or two away from our normally hectic lives whether it be in the UK or further afield is still seen as an important way to re-charge our batteries," Mr Havenhand added.
In related news, Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office, said that the
Canary Islands were an ideal destination for Britons travelling abroad this winter.
According to Mr Vasallo, those travelling to destinations such as
Lanzarote,
Tenerife and
Fuerteventura can expect excellent value for money, good weather and a warm welcome.
