The PWA World Tour [Professional Windsurfers Association] is currently in Fuerteventura [until the 2 August] at the Sotavento beaches for the annual Grand Slam. The event is free to watch and takes place all day.
Both male and female competitors are taking part, racing in the slalom category and displaying special tricks in the freestyle category.
Slalom has similar rules to sailing in that competitors try to beat the opposition through a set course and the first to cross the line is declared the winner. Freestyle sees competitors performing tricks on their boards while the board is on the water.
Events commenced on the 24 July and there are 5 days of world class racing as 63 men have signed up to do battle. Since arriving on the island, conditions have been really windy and if it remains this way then the competition will very tough physically.
So if you are on your holidays in Fuerteventura head to the south of the island to Sotavento Beach and spend the day watching world-class windsurfing.
