A holiday to
Tenerife or any of the other sun-soaked
Canary Islands is not complete without a good book.
And to help holidaymakers decide which novels are worth packing, the Sunday Times has compiled a list of the best holiday reads.
Those looking to relax on the beach with a good work of fiction are advised to opt for a novel such as The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, which scooped last year's Man Booker prize and is described as a "vibrant" rags-to-riches tale.
Other books recommended for lovers of fiction include the Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry and Netherland by Joseph O'Neill, which is said to be president Obama's "fiction of choice".
Meanwhile, those who prefer historical novels are advised to get their hands on a copy of the Lost City of Z by David Grann, which is said to be a "wonderful" story set in the days of heroic exploration.
In a recent poll carried out by financial services provider Abbey, 43 per cent of people said books are their top holiday essential.
