The town of Moya, located in the north of the island of Gran Canaria is currently trying to avoid the loss of one of its most famous symbols - its delicious sponge cakes which have been produced in Moya for years. However, the company that produced the cakes has announced that it will be moving to the nearby town of Guia.
The move is necessary to comply with EU regulations as there is a requirement for more storage space and therefore the company cannot continue in its present premises as they are unable to expand the current premises.
There is currently a rivalry between the 2 towns and news of the move has triggered locals in Moya to launch a "save our cakes" campaign in order to try and pressurise the local authorities to find a solution to the problem and keep the cakes in Moya.
