Those taking holidays to
Gran Canaria and other hotspots this year have been offered some advice on how to stay protected from the sun.
GMTV's resident GP Dr Hilary Jones said it is essential that holidaymakers take precautions to avoid getting sunburnt.
"Did you know getting sunburnt as a child can double your chances of getting skin cancer later in life?" he commented.
Holidaymakers are advised to apply cream at least 30 minutes before they plan to go outside and keep children under the age of three out of the sun at all times.
Using sunglasses is also highly recommended, especially for children, who have more sensitive eyes than older people.
Travellers should also look for the kite mark when buying sun lotion to ensure they are purchasing a quality product, he added.
A recent survey by Sainsbury's found that one in three Brits plan to travel to a European destination this summer.
