Holidaymakers in destinations such as the
Canary Islands should walk and cycle as much as possible to make tourism greener, according to an environmental expert.
Rachel Carey, senior policy adviser at Green Alliance, suggests that more could be done by the travel industry to reduce the environmental impact of holidaying abroad.
"There needs to be some kind of benchmarking of all the operators against set criteria," she states.
Ms Carey's comments come in response to the Live the Deal initiative that was launched last Monday (December 14th) in an attempt to encourage travel companies to respond to climate change.
Luckily, the Canary Islands could provide the perfect holiday destination for travellers to explore their green side on either foot or bicycle.
Secret Destinations describes the area as "an ideal destination for a cycling holiday at any time of the year", with tourists able to visit undiscovered green valleys on
La Gomera, "volcanic villages" on
Lanzarote or desert sand dunes on
Fuerteventura.
