A father and son who are hoping to smash two world records set sail from the island of
La Gomera on a row across the Atlantic yesterday.
The Westmorland Gazette reports that Norman and James Beech will spend Christmas at sea and are set to complete their transatlantic dash by early February.
Currently the world record for a father and son crossing the Atlantic stands at 78 days but the pair, referring to themselves as the Beech Boys Atlantic, hopes to beat this by 13 days.
In addition, 18-year-old James hopes to be crowned with the glory of becoming the youngest rower ever to cross the Atlantic.
Norman Beech says that the row will be a considerable challenge as more people have climbed Everest than rowed the Atlantic.
The Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race is described as one of the world's toughest sea competitions and has been running since 1997.
