The island of La Palma has lost its bid to be chosen as the site for the European Extra Large Telescope [E-ELT] and Canarias MEP, Gabriel Mato, has taken his anger to the European Parliament saying that he wants some answers from the European Southern Observatory as to why La Palma was rejected in favour of a Chilean observatory.
Mato has also called on the European Southern Observatory to reveal the exact reasons why La Palma's Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory was overlooked and also explain what steps they took to back the La Palma bid. He also added "Brussels should be asking itself very seriously why a massive technology project funded with 1 billion euros of taxpayers' money has been awarded to Chile".
Roque de los Muchachos is La Palma's highest peak and you can take a look at [although you can't go in] the International Astronomical Observatory. The Observatory is home to one of the most extensive fleets of telescopes anywhere in the world and conditions in La Palma are idea for night-time observations. In fact, the exterior lighting on the island of La Palma and the area of Tenerife directly visible from La Palma is regulated to prevent light pollution.
