The telescopes located at the Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma have discovered a new galaxy - a massive black hole located approximately 4.5 billion light years from earth.
The Observatory on La Plama has a Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov [MAGIC] with the largest VHE gamma ray telescope in the world and has obverved gamma rays from three new objects outside the Milky Way.
Roque de los Muchachos is La Palma's highest peak and has a spectacular view into the Caldera de Taburiente crater. Here you can take a look at the Internatinal Astronomical Observatory which is home to one of the most extensive fleets of telescopes anywhere in the world, and conditions in La Palma are ideal for night-time observations.
What is a light-year? It is the distance that light travels in a vacuum over 1 year, and is just under 10 trillion kilometres.
