The annual holiday, to popular destinations such as
Lanzarote in the
Canary Islands, is "one of the main highlights of the year", it has been stated.
Bob Atkinson, travel expert at travelsupermarket.com, says: "Brits will give up all sorts of things in order to save up and spend on a trip
as a reward for working hard during the year."
He adds that holidays give people the chance to indulge their interests, whether that is partying, relaxing or soaking up the culture of a destination.
Holidays pip other essentials to the post, Mr Atkinson states. If British people need to choose between a trip abroad or a new sofa, the holiday will almost always win.
In addition to this, Travelzoo has recently revealed that 55 per cent of people plan to travel more in 2010 than they did this year.
Some 22 per cent of those questioned would give up home improvements to save for a holiday, while one-quarter would stop dining out.
