The
Canary Islands of
Lanzarote,
Tenerife and
Gran Canaria have proven to be the most popular destinations for those hoping to escape the UK's freezing temperatures for a spot of winter sun.
OnTheBeach reports that on December 28th alone, the site saw a 35 per cent increase in holiday bookings compared to the same day in 2008.
Additionally, some 42 per cent of bookings that were made during the month of December were for summer holidays, proving that despite the economic downturn Britons are still determined to fit in a sunshine break in 2010.
Alistair Daly, marketing director of the site, says that the significant rise in bookings during the festive season could be attributable to holidaymakers snapping up end of year deals.
He predicts that Spanish destinations - such as the Canary Islands - will have a better year in 2010 in terms of tourism volumes.
A recent study by Hotels.com revealed that 71 per cent of British people plan on having a long summer holiday in the coming year.
