A new initiative has been launched during this week's Copenhagen Climate Summit to help travel destinations around the world - including those such as
Lanzarote in the
Canary Islands - respond to climate change.
The Live the Deal innovation hopes to encourage travel companies and popular destinations to move towards a green economy and reduce their carbon footprint.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the proposed measures will make a link between global policymaking and responsible tourism.
"We should not be ashamed to promote the growth of smart travel - clean, green, ethical and quality - it's the lifeblood of trade, commerce and human connection," says long-time green tourism campaigner and UNWTO assistant secretary-general Geoffrey Lipman.
Tourist arrivals grew by 18 million to reach 922 million in 2009, according to UNWTO, with international tourism generating some 30 per cent of the world's exports of services.
