A local council on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands had said that it is happy to offer rent-free land to anyone willing to guarantee that the land will be utilised for farming purposes.
The area of Teguise want to ensure that more than 2 million square metres of council-owned land is taken care of by people interested in growing crops for their own use or as a source of income. In total, a total of 350 plots will be made available in return for the commitment [must be for a minumum of 2 years] and this agreement would be automatically renewed if the agreement is honoured.
The council has also said that it is prepared to provide tractors, etc that will be needed for crop growing.
The local people have welcomed this move as they believe it will protect much of the area from land speculation and development.
