Families jetting off to sunny destinations such as the
Canary Islands this summer have been urged to ensure that their children are provided with sunglasses.
Research carried out by the College of Optometrists revealed that although the majority of parents apply sun lotion to their youngsters, many are not aware of the need to protect their eyes as well as their skin.
Of those surveyed, 76 per cent admitted that their children do not always wear sunglasses, while 29 per cent of respondents claimed they have never purchased a pair.
Dr Susan Blakeney, an optometric adviser at the College of Optometrists, commented: "Sunglasses don't need to be expensive to offer good protection, but it is important for parents to check that the pair they buy carry a CE mark."
In related news, GMTV's resident GP Dr Hilary Jones said last month that parents should keep children under the age of three out of the sun at all times.
He noted that those who get sunburnt as a child double their chances of getting skin cancer in later life.
