More than two million people watched live television broadcasts of New Year's Eve on the
Canary Islands and, according to tourism chiefs, this could help to boost visitor numbers in 2009.
Celebrations on
Las Palmas beach were broadcast on local and international television networks, with viewers tuning in across Europe and Africa,
Tenerife News reports.
Tourism experts say the spectacular evening would have shown the
Canary Islands at their very best and will encourage more people to visit during 2009
The evening featured performances from the London Symphony Orchestra and a live concert attended by two original Abba members.
Speaking recently, Canary Island tourism chief Rita Martin said the number of people visiting destinations such as
Tenerife and
Lanzarote was encouraging given the current economic climate.
