Although small amounts of sunshine are beneficial, holidaymakers should ensure they do not "over-do" it when abroad.
This is the advice of the British Association of Dermatologists, which recommends that Brits take a few simple steps to protect themselves before venturing out into the sun.
Rebecca Freeman, a spokesperson for the organisation, said it is advisable to invest in a hat and a pair of UV-protective sunglasses.
"It's important to know your risk factor if you are pale skinned and burn easily, if you have a family history of skin cancer, or if you have many moles, you are at greater risk and need to take extra steps to protect yourself," she added.
Spending time in the shade between 11am and 3pm may also help to prevent holidaymakers from burning, Ms Freeman advised.
In a poll carried out by Holiday Extras earlier this month, 40 per cent of Britons admitted to ignoring sun protection advice when they are abroad.
