Those jetting off on holidays to
Tenerife and other popular destinations should not consider travel insurance as a luxury.
This is according to the Association of British Insurers, which said it should be regarded as an integral park of booking a holiday overseas and not simply as an add-on.
A spokesman for the organisation said travelling without cover is an "unnecessary risk" and one that Brits should not take.
"It's false economy and it can almost be deemed as acting recklessly," he added.
Furthermore, the representative noted that in addition to medical expenses, insurance offers protection to those who have their belongings stolen.
Research published earlier this year by InsureandGo revealed that failing to take out cover cost British holidaymakers around £90 million last year, with many having to fund their own cancellation and repatriation costs.
The study found that 14 per cent of Britons have travelled without protection at some point in their lives.
