An increasing number of British newlyweds are opting to take week-long 'mini-moons' to European destinations such as the
Canary Islands, rather than traditional long-haul honeymoons, it has been revealed.
Furthermore, research found that up to a fifth of newlyweds do not go away immediately after their wedding, preferring to holiday a few months after the big day.
Of those surveyed, 35 per cent said they preferred their honeymoon to the actual ceremony itself.
Commenting on the findings, Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "It's interesting to see how trends have changed over the years. With the rise in the number of people cohabiting before they get married nowadays, there are clearly a lot of newlyweds wanting to use their honeymoon as the ultimate break away before they can truly settle down to married life."
Meanwhile, with year-round warm temperatures and sun-kissed golden beaches, the
Canary Islands are an ideal honeymoon destination.
Those looking to begin married life in tranquil surroundings may wish to head to
Tenerife's north coast, which was last week described by the Telegraph as "spectacular".
