The Burial of the Sardine - one of the main festivals celebrated on the
Canary Islands - has been described as "an experience not to be forgotten".
Holidaymakers have been advised by
Tenerife News to make sure that they catch the ceremony, which is held in various locations across the island.
The event centres on the burning of a sardine effigy, accompanied by music and fireworks. There is often a large procession preceding the ritual.
Mourners wail as the poor fish heads to its final resting place, but spirits are otherwise high during this spectacular event, which usually takes place on Ash Wednesday or Shrove Tuesday.
The Burial of the Sardine is celebrated throughout Spain and has become a Lenten season tradition.
A great place to catch the event could be
Puerto de la Cruz, a resort which matches rugged coastlines and green landscapes with the hustle and bustle of a vibrant fishing harbour.
