Those hoping to sample the culture of traditional
Tenerife may wish to go along to the island's San Andres Festival on November 29th.
San Andres Festival maintains a traditional, rural feeling, while being a real treat for food and wine lovers, according to WhatTenerife.
On the eve of San Andres Day, local winemakers in Icos de los Vinos open their cellars for visitors to sample new wines, which can be accompanied with salt fish and roasted chestnuts.
Locally the evening is known as Fiesta de Las Tablas (Festival of the Boards), referring to the tradition whereby youngsters from the area slide down the sloped streets on wooden boards that are greased with tar.
The tradition replicates the way that wood used to be transported to the carpenters in the lower part of the town.
Other local people will drag strings of tin cans around
La Orotava and
Puerto de la Cruz or bang pots and pans.
