
After a decidedly dreary August and no sign of the much-lauded UK "barbecue summer", it seems that people have decided to take matters into their own hands and jet off to warmer climes.
Figures published by Skyscanner show that Spain is the top choice for Brits taking holidays over the coming days, with the sun-soaked island of
Tenerife being named as one of the most popular Spanish hotspots.
Barry Smith, co-founder and director of the company, said that despite the general economic downturn and strength of the euro, Spain remains massively popular with British holidaymakers.
"As a nation, the UK is still in love with Spain," he added.
According to estimates from ABTA The Travel Association, almost two million Brits are heading abroad over the bank holiday weekend, with many eager to get a slice of sunshine before the onset of autumn.
More than 400,000 are expected to depart through London's Heathrow Airport, while 245,500 will leave from Gatwick.
