Rosia Bay is located on the west side of the Rock of Gibraltar and is Gibraltar's only natural harbour and is also where Admiral Nelson's body was brought picked in a barrel of brandy, by HMS Victory after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Rosia Bay is protected by low cliffs on which you will find the Napier Battery which was named after Baron Napier of Magdala who was once the Governor of Gibraltar between the years of 1876 to 1882.
If you enjoy miliary history, then this is the place to visit while on your Gibraltar holiday. Visit Parson's Lodge which is a complex of gun positions, shell stores, batteries, shell hoists and magazines.
On the north side of Rosia Bay is the 100-ton gun. Two of these guns were made for the Italian navy, followed by four more guns - two for Malta and two for Gibraltar.
It took 20 days to move the gun [the weight of 2 Chieftain tanks] on a sleigh, 400 yards to its present position.
There is also a story of the round which failed to fire and an officer called for a volunteer to crawl down the barrel and attach a rope to the shell. After a long pause a man eventually stepped forward. At the completion he was immediately made a Lance Bombadier. | |
The 100-ton gun on show at Rosia Bay was designed by William Armstrong to defend the Strait, and was installed in 1882. It took 2-3 hours to get the gun ready for firing and the gun could fire one round every 4 minutes and the 2,000 pound shell had a range of 8 miles.
