The Botanical Gardens in Gibraltar were formerly known as the Alameda Gardens [
alameda is the Spanish word for a tree-lined promenade].
Governor Sir George Don raised money for their introduction by arranging a series of lotteries and also be stopping 1 day's pay from every soldier who was serving on the Rock. The gardens were eventually opened in 1816 at the side of the parade ground which is also the location where mutineers were hanged and is now between the
Rock Hotel and the casino.
The Botanical Gardens went through a period of neglect until they were brought back to life in the 1990s, assisted with the introduction of plant specimens from Kew Gardens in London.
When you arrive at the Botanical Gardens, you will first be met by iron gates dedicated to Governor Sir George Don. Once inside, you will be greeted by trees, some of which are over 200 years old and flowers and shrubs from all over the world, in particular from South Africa, Western Australia and Canary Islands as well as Madeira.
There is also a dell with a pond and waterfall and an open-air threatre which is used in the summer for concerts and other events.
