Casemates Square in Gibraltar can be reached in one of two ways - via the Landport Gate which has a working drawbridge, and also from Line Wall Road.
Casemates Square has a long history with many military connections. The name comes from the former British Barracks which were located in the north of the Square but its origins go back further to the Moors when Hassan took over Gibraltar. It then became a residential area called La Barcina and then in Spanish times it was part of the Villavieja [old town]. It was subsequently taken over by the British and was largely destroyed during the Great Siege when it was levelled and became a military parade ground and was also used for public hangings.
Today, Casemates Square is full of cafes, tapas bars and other meeting places. There is a small shopping arcade with shops selling crafts, jewellery, silverware and Moroccan goods.
