Among the Gibraltar tunnels are the Great Siege Tunnels [also known as the Upper Galleries] which are the most impressive. The vast network of Gibraltar tunnels [50km / 30 miles] was blasted into the Rock in 1782 by the company of Solder Artificers [the forerunners of the Royal Engineers] in order for British forces to position their cannons at a great height and win the Great Siege.
The garrison commander, General Elliot, offered a reward to anyone suggesting a way of mounting a gun on a projection on the north face of the Rock. It was suggested excavating a gallery and as work progressed, ventilation holes were blasted and it was soon realised that these would make excellent gun emplacements.
An interesting exhibition located at Hay's Level, Upper Rock [a fair walk from the Gibraltar cable car station], shows what it would have been like to be a soldier during the campaign. There are models of soldiers in the uniform of the time, including Sergeant Major Ince [who suggested the excavation of the gallery] and General Elliot, plus many real cannons.
