St Michael's Cave is filled with stalactites and stalagmites and is the largest of the group of Gibraltar caves. [There are reckoned to be in the region of 150 caves on the Rock of Gibraltar].
It has also played an important role in its history - once being home to groups of Neolithic people and then prepared to be used as a emergency hospital during World War II. Now, St Michael's Cave functions as a dramatic backdrop to concerts and fashion shows. There are daily shows of Son et Lumiere.
Look out for the stalagmite which has fallen on its side which reveals a cross section showing the history of its growth. Stalactites: Hang down from the ceiling Stalgmites: Grow up from the ground | |
