ALBUFEIRA TRAVEL GUIDE
The Algarve, PortugalIf you are looking for a holiday hotel, apartment or villa in Albufeira, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Every inch a resort, Albufeira tops the list of destinations in the Algarve. It was once a pretty village with narrow lanes of whitewashed houses. Some of these still exist, but it has now become a holiday resort with an excellent choice of hotels, villas and apartments. However, Albufeira is still a very nice resort, attracting a varied mix of holidaymakers.
There's still a Moorish feel to parts of central Albufeira, as well as the more tangible remnants of a Moorish castle - the original Arabic name of the town,
al-Buhera, which means Castle-on-the-Sea.
The summer crowds tend to spend their days at one of many of the excellent cove-beaches in the vicinity. The beach in Alfufeira itself is reached through a tunnel.
If you are in Albufeira staying in a hotel or apartment, you might well be staying just outside Albufeira in one of the handful of smaller resorts on either side, like Montechoro, Areias de Sao Joao or Praia da Oura. However, all have access to their own beaches and are, in many cases, within 2-3 km of the town centre, which you can reach on regular local buses or by taxi.
Albufeira has restaurants to match every budget - and most tastes. As well as traditional Portuguese restaurants, there is also a whole range of places serving pizzas, Chinese and Indian food, even fish and chips. Naturally, you tend to get what you pay for [and prices in Albufeira tend to be more expensive that the neighbouring resorts] and the more popular restaurants are serving fresh fish caught that day. A local culinary speciality is
cataplana [fish stew], and he simpler but also popular, grilled sardines, are also very appreciated and are traditional dishes across the entire region.
The nightlife on “The Strip” located near the Montechoro section of Albufeira, proves especially popular during the summer with all ages but particularly the younger tourists. Going down “The Strip” the most popular bars include Erin’s Isle, Linekers, Café del Mar, Mustangs, BJ’s, Garage, Reno’s, La Bamba, and Wild & Co. There is also an extremely popular nightclub - Kiss. Kadoc, located around 11km away between Albufeira and
Vilamoura near the town of Boliqueime.
The rocky red headlands just to the west of Albufeira are beautiful - although not easily accessible. The main neighbouring resorts - Sao Rafael, Castelo and Gale - spread back from small cove beaches and are mainly dominated by villa developments. Immediately east of Albufeira, ochre-red cliffs divide the coastline into a series of bays and beaches, all reached on local buses from the bus station. You can walk to the first - Praia da Oura - just 2km from Albufeira. Or continue on by bus to Olhos de Agua, 7km further east. At Praia da Falesia [10km east of Albufeira] and 20 minutes away by bus, the character of the coastline changed to produce one long tremendous stretch of sand, backed by unbroken red cliffs.
