ALCOUTIM TRAVEL GUIDE
The Algarve, PortugalIf you are looking for a holiday hotel, apartment or villa in Alcoutim, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Alcoutim has the atmosphere of a timeless town. Life here moves at the pace of the horse-drawn ploughs that are still used to till the surrounding fields. Ferrymen frequent the local cafe just above the quay, and take passengers across the river to San Lucar in Spain on request. There are no border controls, so it is easy to slip across the river.
Both towns are dominated by their castle. San Lucar's is the biggest - a massive structure on the cone-shaped hill above the town - but Alcoutim's is the oldest. The excavated remains of Roman structures have been overlain by 11th century Moorish remains, in turn superseded by a 1304 fortress. Both castles are a reminder of former hostilities between Spain and Portugal.
Besides Alcoutim's castle, the other good viewpoint is the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceico [hermitage of Our Lady of Conception]. This whitewashed church, approached via an 18th century stone staircase, stands at the highest point in the village and allows views down into the village gardens and across the flat rooftops of the simple, cube-shaped houses.
