The region of Alcoutim was conquered from the Arabs in the 13th century and a new castle started to be built.
Overlooking the river Guadiana, the castle of Alcoutim [known locally as Castelo de Alcoutim] stands high upon a hill, with long walls that offer excellent views over the surrounding landscape.
Alcoutim Castle was classified a Monument of Public Interest in 1993 and currently houses an Archeological Museum.
