Alvor remains a small resort with a selection of bars and restaurants which, at times, cannot cope with the number of visitors during the summers months. Whitewashed houses and lovely views of the estuary help to keep Alvor’s charm.
The beach in enormous and here, at least, you can escape the crowds.
The Quinta da Rocha nature area lies in the peninsula between the mouths of the rivers Alvor and Odiáxere, northwest of Alvor’s huge beach. It is an extensive area which, in the parts given over to citrus and almond groves, consists of copses, salt marshes, sandy spits and estuarine mud flats, forming a wide range of habitats for different plants and animals - including 22 species of wading birds.
The original 16th century Parish Church was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 and still has an example in its main doorway of the Manueline era of architecture. It was the only building that more of less survived the earthquake.
