ARMACAO DE PERA TRAVEL GUIDE
The Algarve, PortugalIf you are looking for a holiday hotel, apartment or villa in Armacao de Pera, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
The resort of Armacao de Pera claims the largest beach in the Algarve [not a unique claim in this region] and also boasts caves and strange rock formations to the west, around which there are daily boat trips in the summer. The town’s beach is fine, but if things are crowded, head east along the beach for 30 minutes or so as far as the Restaurante Salgados, right on the sands and serving sardines and grilled fish and chicken - it’s usually fairly quiet this far out.
The remains of the town’s fortified walls are at the eastern end of the seafront road; a terrace in front of a little white chapel provides sweeping views.
Not very long ago Armacao de Pera was nothing more than a collection of small dwellings where the local residents from the nearby village of Pera used to maintain their fishing boats. It is quite probably that the name “Armacao” is linked with the distant past to the great tuna fishing industry that existed along the Algarve coast from the 15th century and before.
In the summer months, the town overflows with holiday-makers but outside of the high season, it offers a wonderful peaceful holiday location, and the nearby rural village of Pera remains as a reminder of the un-spoilt typical sleepy Algarve.
