The Capela dos Ossos [Chapel of Bones] is a must for unsqueamish children, who will find this ghoulish site enormous fun.
The Carmelite monks, who created the chapel from the bones of their deceased brothers would be horrified at such disrespect. Perhaps the intended
momento mori effect [the inscription over the entrance translates as "Stop here and think of the fate that will befall you"] would have been better achieved by a less decorous arrangement of skeletal remains. The chapel has leg and arm bones used to create a classical architectural arrangement of arches.
