FERRAGUDO TRAVEL GUIDE
The Algarve, Portugal

If you are looking for a holiday hotel or apartment in Ferragudo, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.

Ferragudo faces Portimao across the estuary of Rio Arade. It is a small and traditional resort full of narrow streets and tiny houses sprawling around the Fort of Sao Joao de Arade - the partner to that in Praia da Rocha - which was built in the 16th century to defend Portimao against attack. At the start of the 20th century the fort was turned into a home which is how it remains today [so unfortunately you are not able to go inside].

There are some lovely beaches in Ferragudo, Praia Grande and Praia do Pintadinho are just 2 of them. The main Ferragudo beach is about a kilometre to the south of the town and is popular in a small-scale way, with a windsurfing school and a scattering of restaurant-bars.

Palm-fringed gardens run alongside a narrow riverlet up to the main cobbled square - Praca Rainha Dona Leonor. This is a lovely square with lots of cafes where you can sit for a coffee and pastry or breakfast, or something more substantial for lunch. Take a walk to the quay where you will find more fish restaurants with a lovely view across Rio Arade.
