LAGOS TRAVEL GUIDE
The Algarve, PortugalIf you are looking for a holiday hotel, apartment or villa in Lagos, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort.
Lagos is an atmospheric town encircled by massive 16th century walls that effectively shut out the 21st century, including the western Algarve’s biggest concentration of hotel developments to the west of the town. Holidaymakers, after spending time at the beach, drift to Lagos to discover a maze of cobbled streets, too narrow for cars to go. Café owners have set up tables and chairs, tempting visitors to stop and sample their coffee and cakes, in between exploring the town’s churches, museums, art galleries, antique shops and bustling market.
If you are visiting by car, parking spaces are normally available along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos, the palm-lined road that runs alongside the River Bensafrim. Sheltered from the open sea, the river was adapted for use as a canal to provide access to the town’s harbour. Sleek white yachts and fishing boats sit side by side in the modern harbour, and signs point the way to companies offering fishing trips and trips to caves and coves of Ponta da Piedade.
The social hub of Lagos lies at Praça Gil Eannes, with a huge statue of Dom Sebastião at the centre of the square. This modern statue [1973] is the work of sculptor João Cutileiro, and portrays Prince Sebastian who believed it was his mission to conquer North Africa and convert the Moors to Christianity. He gathered an army of 18,000 men and set sail from Lagos in 1578. When his ill-equipped army met a vastly superior force at Alcacer-Quibir, in Morocco, only 100 Portuguese survivors emerged from the battle to tell the tale!
