Portimao is one of the Algarves main fishing ports where there is much local life as the catches are brought in at the citys harbour where a long waterfront promenade, repaved and landscaped in 2002, allows for easy walking.

Silves, and trips to explore the caves and cliffs at

With its high-quality shops, Portimao is an excellent place if you prefer real shops to those geared to tourists. The latter is laid out as a park, with fountains and flower beds and benches decorated with azulejo [tiled] pictures depicting events in Portuguese history.
The city has recently benefited from massive investment resulting in underground parking in the main square and a new marina to the west.
