Portimao is one of the Algarves main fishing ports where there is much local life as the catches are brought in at the citys harbour where a long waterfront promenade, repaved and landscaped in 2002, allows for easy walking.
Fishing trips, for beginners and the more experienced angler, are advertised around the quay. Other options include Arade River cruises to
Silves, and trips to explore the caves and cliffs at
Algar Seco. The smell of grilled sardines rises above numerous atmospheric restaurants just off the quayside or where once fishermen lived [through a short tunnel under Rua Sepa Pinto]. This is one of the best places to enjoy typical Algarve seafood.
With its high-quality shops, Portimao is an excellent place if you prefer real shops to those geared to tourists. Heading inland from the harbour, Rua Dr Joćo Vitorino, Rua Direita and Largo 1 de Dezembro offer plenty of choice. The latter is laid out as a park, with fountains and flower beds and benches decorated with azulejo [tiled] pictures depicting events in Portuguese history.
The city has recently benefited from massive investment resulting in underground parking in the main square and a new marina to the west.
