Praia da Rocha [Rock Beach] is 5 minutes south of
Portimao by bus, and was one of the first Algarve tourist developments and it is easy to see why. The beach is one of the most beautiful along the entire coast - a wide expanse of sand [2km] framed by jagged sea cliffs and the walls of an old fort built in 1691 - the Fotaleza de Santa Caterina, that once protected the mouth of the River Arade. The fort itself now houses a café-restaurant, whose terrace offers splendid views at sunset with the beach and ocean on one side,
Ferragudo and river on the other.
Restaurants are plentiful and the half a dozen down on the beach means that you don’t have to leave the sands during the day.
