Located 30km east of Faro, Tavira is one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve. It is situated on both sides of the broad Rio Gilão, which is overlooked by ancient balconied houses and straddled by two low bridges, one of Roman origin.
Founded as long ago as 400BC, Tavira’s greatest period of prosperity came in the 16th - 18th centuries, the age that produced most of its graceful array of churches and mansions. In the old town streets on both sides of the river, numerous houses retain fine old doorways and coats of arms.
Lounge around on the superb island beach of the Ilha de Tavira, which lies within easy reach of the town by year-round ferry.
There are also several quieter spots in the area, such a Pedras d’el Rei - a holiday village nearby, and for some excellent seafood the tiny fishing village of Santa Luzia.
The best part of Tavira is the river. Gardens lined with cafes run as far as the lively harbourside market, beyond which are moored the fishing boats that still operate out of the river port. This is a great place to wander, among the nets and marine clutter, stopping at one of the restaurants or more basic fishermen’s bars, most of which serve up memorable meals, generally involving tuna steaks.
