Rainfall is highest in the mountains and rural life is often disrupted in winter by huge snowfalls. The sandy Black Sea coast is Bulgaria's main lure as it still has stunning beaches and picturesque bays.
There are ample hiking trails and horse-riding routes which enable visitors to discover Bulgaria's lush mountains and landscapes, especially around the Rila and Pirin Mountains. The cities in Bulgaria are sometime overlooked - Sofia [the capital] has lovely parks, bars and fascinating museums and architectural treasures.
Eating out in Bulgaria:Bulgarian cooking has a reputation of being tasty, spicy and varied. There is an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits, juicy meat, grilled or served with piquant sauces, mouth-watering vegetarian dishes, simmered slowly on low heat, banitsa [cheese pie] and famous Bulgarian yoghurt.
