ABOUT THE CITY OF VANCOUVER:Canada’s fastest growing city, Vancouver is a magical place, full of contradictions. Named after the first European to discover the area George Vancouver, it is the gateway to the Pacific, and its deep, sheltered harbour made it an ideal place for settlement, especially after the discovery of coal nearby led to the need for a port. Gastown harks back to those days, a quaint Victorian cobbled area now turned from a working port to an upmarket area of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques. Right next to it is the Lookout Tower, an observation deck 33 floors above the Harbour Centre. A different range of views can be obtained from Stanley Park, a vast area of woodland, lakes and garden, which also houses the city’s aquarium.
Vancouver is renowned for it’s easy-going, cosmopolitan lifestyle, with leisure activities including sailing and trips into the surrounding wilderness in summer and skiing in winter. With a long history as a port, it has communities for a wide range of backgrounds and its Chinatown is the second largest in North America, and is a must for its atmosphere, shops and restaurants. World cuisine is also a speciality of the city, including Indian, Italian, Greek, Japanese and Korean restaurants in their respective quarters, while Gastown is home to world-class international cuisine.
Culture is centred on Granville Island, which is home to both traditional art centres and events and the city’s sometimes wild nightlife. By day, it is the site of a vast public market. The city’s museums include the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Gallery, housed in a beautiful Edwardian building.
This vibrant city, set at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, with its mix of old and new, high culture and alternative bands, urban living and beautiful wilderness, has to be on anyone’s list of places to visit.
