Location of Cape Verde:The Cape Verde Islands are an arrow-shaped archipelago of ten islands, five islets and various rocks and stacks which poke out of the eastern Atlantic. The archipelago is the furthest south of the groups of islands known to scientists as Macronesia. Others of that group include the Azores and the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are over 1,000km away while the Azores are 2,500km away.
The islands of Cape Verde are divided into two groups - the Barlavento [or windward] islands to the north are Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolau, Sal and Boavista. The Sotavento [or leeward] island to the south are Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.
The nearest land mass is Senegal which is 385 miles to the east.
Beaches in Cape Verde:You can expect to find superb beaches when you holiday in Cape Verde with long stretches of fine white sand. The most popular beaches are on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, whilst Santiago, Maio and Sao Vicente have fine but little visited beaches.
Marine life is tropical and the water is abundant in undiscovered species, making it an exciting place for biologists to explore. Divers will see a slection of large tropical fish such as green turtles, yellow-fin tuna, moray eels, marlin, dolphins and groupers.
Marine turtles are some of the most important species on the islands as Cape Verde is an important staging post for them along their long migratory corridor between America and Africa.
Eating our in Cape Verde:Fish lovers will be in heaven on a Cape Verde holiday. The grilled lobster is superb, as are the fresh tuna, octopus and a multitude of other delicacies.
A local speciality is jams and semi-dried fruits. These are often served as desserts along with fresh goat's cheese, making a delicious end to the meal.
On the streets you will find womean with trays of sweets, monkey-nuts, sugared peanuts and popcorn. Sometimes they will have fish pastries and trays of homemade sweets. The confectionery is very sugary, and flavours are mainly coconut, peanut and papaya. You will also be able to find fried moreia - moray eel .... nice, although greasy and bony!
The drink that Cape Verdeans literally live and die for is grogue. It is locally produced on Santo Antao and abundandly available.
