Fogo - Cape Verde Holidays
In Creole, Fogo means "fire"... Fogo is a volcano, still active, and inside the crater the latest eruption still smokes gently. Dark lava flows from centuries of eruptions to reach down its eastern side to the ocean. Amongst the clods of cold lava that have covered much of the floor of the crater are fertile fields. On the northeast side are woods of eucalyptus and cool valleys in which grown coffee and vines. Fogo is therefore one of principal hiking islands.
It can be dangerous to swim on Fogo, but when the sea looks really calm it is safe at the beach at the port, and at Praia Nossa Senhora. The best place to swim however, is Ponte Salina - a stunning cove with black rock formations smothered by white seaspray and riddled with grottos and reefs.
The main town is San Filipe [Sao Filipe] which is full of Portuguese squares, esplanades and houses . The streets are cobbled, the buildings are pastel with terracotta tiles, and vegetation springs from pots on fragile wooden balconies.
