Sal is full of interesting birds and shells, but it is not the place for mountain walkers or those who love lush, green scenery. However, it is the most developed of the islands and is the home of the main airport and many international hotels. It has excellent white sandy beaches which is one of the reasons why it is so popular. The main holiday resort on the island is Santa Maria where you will find a variety of restaurants, bars and shops.
